Questions & answers
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we get asked most, about hiring a trailer and about mobile servicing and repairs. If yours isn’t here, ring Glyn on 07851 731 158 or send a message and we’ll answer it. The full hire terms and conditions are here.
Hiring a trailer
- What can I hire?
- Ifor Williams HB506 and HB511 horse trailers — the HB511 is the longer, taller option, carrying two horses up to around 17.2hh — and a 25-tonne towable log splitter, which can be hired on its own or with an operator.
- How much does it cost?
- Horse trailer hire starts at £50 a day, £70 for a weekend, £120 a week. Every trailer’s own page lists its full day, weekend, week and month rates, and the weekend rate covers Saturday and Sunday.
- How do I book?
- Send your dates through the booking form or ring Glyn on 07851 731 158. Nothing is taken at that point — we confirm the trailer is free and the price with you first, and a 20% deposit then secures the dates.
- Is there a deposit?
- Two, and they do different jobs. A 20% deposit confirms your dates. There is also a refundable security and damage deposit, paid in cash when the trailer is collected or dropped off, and returned after the trailer has been checked back in.
- Can I cancel or change my booking?
- Yes, up to 48 hours before the hire date. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the hire date are not refunded.
- How do I pay?
- An invoice is sent before the hire starts and is payable on or before the hire date. The cash security and damage deposit is paid when the trailer is collected or dropped off. Long-term hires are paid on the 1st of each month. Late payment charges apply to overdue payments.
- Do you deliver, or do I collect?
- Either. Local delivery is free, and delivery further afield is quoted when you enquire. Collection is from Buxton by arrangement.
- What area do you cover?
- Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire for both hire and mobile servicing.
- Does the trailer come insured?
- No — insuring the trailer for the hire period is the hirer’s responsibility. Tell your motor insurer you will be towing, and arrange cover for damage to and theft of the trailer itself. Ask us if you are not sure what you need.
Towing and licences
- What licence do I need to tow?
- Since December 2021, drivers with an ordinary car licence in Great Britain can tow trailers up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass. Older licences and licences from outside GB differ, so check your own entitlement on GOV.UK before you book — we will ask to see your licence at handover.
- Will my vehicle tow it?
- Check your vehicle’s towing capacity in its handbook or on its VIN plate before booking. For reference, the HB506 has a gross weight of 2,600kg and the HB511 2,700kg, both around 1,000kg unladen. If you are unsure, ring us with your vehicle details.
- What do I need to bring?
- A suitable tow vehicle with a compliant towbar and coupling, plus:
- Your valid photo driving licence
- Proof of your current address
- A square number plate with your registration
- Proof of suitable insurance
- Can it carry two horses?
- Yes. The HB506 takes two horses up to around 16.2hh; the HB511 is the roomier option and takes two up to around 17.2hh. Both have a centre partition with breast and breeching bars fitted.
Servicing and repairs
- Do you come to me?
- Yes — servicing and repairs are mobile across Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire. We come to your yard, site or home, so the trailer and the tow vehicle stay where they are.
- What does a service include?
- A 20-point inspection covering the coupling, brakes, bearings, wheels and tyres, suspension, electrics, chassis, floor, bodywork, ramps and security devices. The trailer is cleaned, greased and oiled where needed, and anything found is written up and discussed with you.
- How much does a service cost?
- Trailer services start from £150. Any parts or extra work are quoted separately, before anything is done.
- What if something needs replacing?
- You get a clear quote before any parts are fitted or extra work is carried out. Nothing is done without your say-so, and if it helps we will send you a video of what needs doing.
- What types of trailer do you work on?
- All types up to 3.5 tonnes — horse trailers, agricultural trailers, car transporters, plant and builders’ trailers, and trailers used by ground maintenance teams, gardeners and tree surgeons. All makes and models.
- Can you service a fleet on a schedule?
- Yes. We can set up structured service intervals around your business so nothing is missed and downtime is planned rather than unexpected.
